MFR is an extremely effective complement to chiropractic, physical therapy treatments, or any personal health and wellness programs. And MFR is safe and effective for all ages.
WHAT MYOFASCIAL RELEASE FEELS LIKE
Using the John Barnes’ Myofascial Release Approach, the MFR therapist is led by the client’s body in pressure, time and direction to achieve an authentic release of the myofascial system. One of the basic principles of MFR is “Wait at the Barrier.” This means that as my hands slowly sink into the tissue, there is a point at which the body stops my hands – I feel an opposing force. This is the barrier. This is the place where the body feels safe with my hands. So if I want to go deeper right at that moment, I would have to push through this barrier and fight the opposing force with my force to achieve my definition of the ends. This does not feel safe to the client’s body, and so it goes into protection. However, waiting at the barrier allows me to truly connect with your tissue, allow a response, and follow the release three dimensionally.
With time and patience, layer by layer the tissue releases. It takes a minimum of five minutes for the piezoelectric effect to begin, that is, for the electric currents generated by the pressure upon the myofascial system to allow movement and release. As each layer becomes more pliable, the body allows deeper and deeper access. And since the entire fascial system is one continuous structure consisting of a network of tubules containing fluid with crystalline properties, the longer the therapist’s pressure follows the deepening release, the more areas of the body are affected.
As the tissue releases layer by layer, the therapist follows the direction of ease, taking up slack to continue pressure at the barrier. A release can feel like butter melting or taffy stretching and can be accompanied by sensations such as tingling, heat, twitching and "buzzing." As the layers deepen, there can be an intense feeling – therapeutic pain – however, since there is no forcing of the tissue, this intense feeling becomes a guide to healing, and does not feel injurious. Myofascial unwinding occurs at this level, when the receiver’s body, feeling safe enough to let go, spontaneously moves as the tissue releases, perhaps just regionally, such as the arm or neck, or sometimes growing into a full body compressive twist or lengthening stretch. This is the body’s self-correcting mechanism, and gives an extremely deep, powerful release, both physical and emotional.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT
Please arrive on time to ensure the full length of your appointment.
Please refrain from using lotion the day of your appointment to ensure optimal skin contact. This includes sunscreen and facial moisturizer.
For myofascial release sessions, please wear exercise clothes, such as a sports bra and loose shorts. MFR must occur directly on the skin — your safety and comfort are always respected.
Hydrated tissue ensures optimal results from your bodywork — please arrive hydrated! Be sure to drink plenty of water after the session to help rehydrate the released fascia, for more effective results.
